Bhubaneswar: Tension gripped the premises of AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Saturday after the death of a patient allegedly sparked violence, with the deceased's relatives assaulting a doctor and creating chaos inside the hospital.

The deceased has been identified as Shibashankar Behera, a resident of Ogalpada in Jaanla, who had been admitted to the hospital in a critical condition after allegedly consuming poison.

According to hospital sources, Shibashankar died during treatment on Saturday morning.

Following his death, his family members and several villagers accused the hospital of medical negligence, alleging that lapses in treatment led to his death. The situation quickly escalated as an agitated group allegedly assaulted a doctor, turning parts of the hospital premises into a virtual battleground.

On receiving information, a team from Khandagiri Police Station rushed to the hospital and brought the situation under control. Police detained several people involved in the disturbance and took them to the police station for questioning.

Police have also begun examining CCTV footage from the hospital to identify those involved in the assault and determine the sequence of events.

Speaking on the incident, the officer-in-charge of Khandagiri Police Station said appropriate legal action would be taken against those found responsible for the violence.

Meanwhile, authorities are continuing their investigation into both the alleged assault on the doctor and the circumstances surrounding the patient's death. AIIMS Bhubaneswar has not yet issued an official statement on the allegations of medical negligence.

AIIMS authorities deny medical negligence 

The authorities of AIIMS, Bhubaneswarenies, meanwhile denied allegations of negligence in the treatment of the patient. “Every possible medical intervention was undertaken in accordance with standard clinical protocols by the treating team,” said the authorities while expressing deep sorrow over the demise of the 36-year-old patient.

According to them, the patient had been admitted to the Emergency Department of the premier health institute in a critical condition on Jena 24.

“He was immediately attended to by the emergency medical team, stabilised, and provided with all necessary emergency interventions. Thereafter, he was shifted to the Medicine Ward, where he continued to receive treatment strictly in accordance with established standard treatment protocols,” they said.

The patient's condition deteriorated suddenly Saturday morning. The treating doctors and nursing staff promptly initiated all life-saving resuscitative measures. Despite exhaustive efforts by the treating team and adherence to the highest standards of medical care, the patient could not be revived and was declared deceased, they added.

The hospital authorities also condemned the alleged assault on the doctors and health staff after the patient’s demise. "Violence against doctors and healthcare workers is completely unacceptable and cannot be justified under any circumstances. Our medical team made every possible effort to save the patient's life while adhering to established clinical protocols,” said the hospital authorities.
