Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards strengthening railway infrastructure in Odisha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate seven redeveloped railway stations in the state on July 17 (Friday).

These seven railway stations—Balangir, Barpali, Paralakhemundi, Talcher, Kesinga, Baripada and Bimalgarh—have been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), said the Indian Railways on Thursday.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate altogether 75 redeveloped railway stations across the country on Friday. These stations reflect the government’s commitment to creating world class railway infrastructure while preserving the unique cultural and architectural identity of each region. The Amrit Bharat Station scheme aims to transform railway stations into modern, accessible and future ready transport hubs that cater to the evolving needs of passengers, it added.

The upgraded stations now offer a host of improved passenger amenities and enhanced accessibility. Key features include modern station buildings, 12-metre-wide foot over bridges equipped with lifts to provide seamless and barrier free movement, and widened approach roads for smoother traffic circulation, said an official.  

Passenger facilities such as spacious waiting halls, improved platform shelters, modern toilets, upgraded lighting, digital passenger information systems and standardized signage have also been provided to ensure greater comfort and convenience. The circulating areas and parking facilities have been redesigned to improve traffic management and enhance the overall passenger experience, he added.

A distinctive aspect of the redevelopment project is the incorporation of Odisha's rich cultural heritage into the station architecture. The redesigned stations feature locally inspired motifs and artwork highlighting the state's traditional handloom, handicrafts and tribal heritage, creating a unique identity while offering a welcoming ambience to passengers and visitors alike.

Beyond improving travel experience, the redeveloped stations are expected to serve as important catalysts for regional growth by strengthening connectivity and supporting tourism, trade, education and local economic activities. They are envisioned not merely as transit points, but as vibrant public spaces that reflect the aspirations, culture and development of the region.

“The redevelopment of these seven stations marks another milestone in Indian Railways' ongoing efforts to provide safe, modern, inclusive and comfortable travel facilities while contributing to the overall socio-economic development of Odisha,” said the Railways.
