Bhubaneswar: Amid concerns over alleged diversion of railway infrastructure, the Railways Ministry has clarified that not a single inch of railway track is being shifted out of Odisha

Officials emphasised that all current and planned projects are aimed at strengthening the state’s internal rail network while also enhancing inter-state connectivity for broader economic gains.

Massive investment signals strong growth push

Odisha has witnessed a significant surge in railway investments, with over Rs 93,000 crore allocated for infrastructure development. The annual railway budget has exceeded Rs 10,000 crore for three consecutive years—marking nearly a 13-fold increase compared to the 2009–14 period. This sustained funding highlights the state’s growing importance in national railway expansion plans.

Rayagada Railway Division to become operational soon

In a major administrative development, the Rayagada Railway Division has been formally sanctioned and is expected to commence operations shortly. The new division is set to improve operational efficiency, streamline services, and drive regional economic development, particularly in southern parts of the state.

KK Line inclusion ensures revenue stability

The high-revenue Kothavalasa–Kirandul (KK) line will be brought under the Rayagada Division. Despite spanning parts of neighbouring states, its inclusion ensures that East Coast Railway continues to retain its revenue share, addressing concerns over potential financial losses, the Ministry of Railways stated in a release on Friday.

No revenue impact from Palasa–Ichchapuram section

Officials also clarified that the Palasa–Ichchapuram stretch does not host any major originating freight stations. As a result, administrative restructuring in this segment will not adversely impact the earnings of East Coast Railway.

Balanced strategy for growth and safeguards

The developments reflect a calibrated approach—accelerating railway infrastructure expansion while safeguarding the financial and operational interests of Odisha. The government reiterated its commitment to transforming the state into a key railway hub, supporting industrial growth, mineral logistics, and improved passenger services.
