Bhubaneswar: The death toll of Odia workers in the ammonia gas leak tragedy at a seafood processing factory in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district has risen to six. Another injured worker from Odisha succumbed while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Jamuni Juanga, a resident of Keonjhar district. She had been receiving treatment after suffering serious health complications caused by exposure to toxic ammonia gas following the leak at the factory.
Earlier, five Odia workers from Keonjhar district had lost their lives in the incident. They were identified as Gumani Juanga, Geeta Juanga, Champabati Juanga, Shibani Juanga and Phulomani Juanga.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday at a private seafood processing and export unit in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district. A suspected ammonia gas leak from the factory's refrigeration or processing system exposed workers to hazardous fumes, triggering panic inside the facility.
Around 120 migrant workers, including several from Odisha, Assam and Jharkhand, were present at the factory when the leak took place. Many workers reportedly experienced breathing difficulties, dizziness and irritation after inhaling the gas, while some collapsed at the site.
According to official figures, 64 workers were affected by the leak and several of them were admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The Odisha government has been closely monitoring the situation and has already deputed a three-member team to Tamil Nadu to coordinate relief measures and assist affected workers from the state. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had earlier expressed grief over the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased workers.
Authorities are continuing efforts to provide medical assistance to the injured and facilitate support for the affected families. Investigations into the cause of the gas leak are also underway.
