Bhubaneswar: An undertrial prisoner (UTP) died after he reportedly developed some health complications in a jail in Odisha’s Kandhamal district today.

However, the deceased’s family members have alleged that he was subjected to custodial torture.

The Phulbani Town police had detained two persons, including a minor, on charges of snatching a bag containing Rs 10,000 from a cop on April 12.

The police produced the one of the accused persons in a local court on April 14. Subsequently, the accused was sent to Phulbani Circle Jail as his bail plea was rejected in the court.

The prisoner was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) after he developed some health complications today morning. He died while being treated at the health facility.

The deceased’s family members, however, claimed that the police had tortured him in the custody before producing him in the court.

“There is no truth in the allegations of the deceased’s family members. However, we will conduct a probe in this regard. We are waiting for the postmortem report to know the exact cause behind the accused’s death. He had been booked in at least eight cases in the past,” Phulbani SDPO Subrajit Biswal.
