Every year, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Union Ministry of Power observes December 14 as the National Energy Conservation Day. The purpose behind observance of the National Energy Conservation Day is to showcase India’s contribution to energy conservation and steps taken towards becoming an energy-efficient nation.

On the occasion, BEE spreads awareness amongst masses regarding energy efficiency and the need to go green.

BEE, a constitutional body, was established in March 2002 after the formulation of the Energy Conservation Act in India in 2001.

BEE forms policies pertaining to energy conservation and works to aware the general public around the same issue. The Energy Conservation Act 2001 came into existence to monitor and measure energy efficiency in the private and public sector at all levels.

Another purpose of this day is to showcase India’s achievements in energy conservation among masses. Energy Conservation means using the available resources judiciously and/or preventing wastage of energy through efficient methods.

Also, the special occasion is marked by giving the National Energy Conservation Award to recognize organizations and industrial units for achieving energy utilization and conservation targets. The award was instituted in 1991.

The annual award is given by the Government of India to industries, buildings, transport institutions and appliances sectors.
