Bhubaneswar: In a remarkable display of speed, precision and clinical excellence, doctors at CARE Hospitals, Bhubaneswar, successfully saved the life of a 29-year-old man by performing an emergency open-heart surgery for Type-1 Acute Aortic Dissection, one of the most fatal cardiovascular emergencies where survival depends on immediate diagnosis and intervention.

The young patient was rushed to the Emergency Department with sudden, excruciating chest pain. Recognising the seriousness of the condition, Dr. Giridhari Jena, Senior Consultant – Cardiology, promptly diagnosed the life-threatening aortic dissection, allowing the multidisciplinary team to mobilise within minutes and take the patient for emergency surgery.

The highly complex procedure was successfully led by Dr. Suvakanta Biswal, Senior Consultant – Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS), along with Dr. Somen, Consultant – CTVS. The surgery was supported by the Cardiac Anaesthesia team comprising Dr. Dharmajeevan, Dr. Manoranjan Padhi, Dr. Debashis and Dr. Shweta, besides the dedicated CTVS ICU and OT nursing staff, perfusionists and OT technicians.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Suvakanta Biswal said, "Type-1 Acute Aortic Dissection is among the most life-threatening cardiac emergencies, with the risk of death increasing significantly with every passing hour if left untreated. Timely diagnosis, rapid surgical intervention and seamless teamwork enabled us to save this young patient's life. Following surgery, the patient made an excellent recovery under intensive monitoring and was discharged in stable condition on the fifth post-operative day.
