Bhubaneswar: The police have arrested a personnel of Fire Services Department on charges of raping a nurse in Odisha.

The accused has been identified as Jitu Ranjan Das. He was working as a fireman at Angul.

Das, a married person, had come in contact with the nurse through social media around four months ago. Pretending himself as an unmarried person, Das developed a relationship with the nurse and promised to marry her.

He later raped the nurse. The victim had lodged a complaint in this regard with Pahala police June 20.

The police had registered a case in this regard and launched a probe into the incident.

A team of Pahala police arrested the accused from Kendrapara district. The accused was earlier booked in two rape cases, said Zone-4 Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Manas Kumar Deo today.

“We will write to the Director General of Fire Brigade to initiate departmental action against the accused fireman. We will produce the accused in a court soon,” added the ACP.
