Kutra: Tension prevailed in Kutra block in Odisha's Sundargarh district after villagers of Uparbahal detained around 20 trucks loaded with industrial ash late at night, alleging illegal dumping in their area and severe environmental pollution.
The incident took place under Khatkurbahal panchayat, where locals intercepted the vehicles and accused industries of disposing of waste ash in nearby locations, including Dungleipahad, Gherapahad, and areas near the local health centre.
Rs 20 lakh pond allegedly buried under industrial waste
Villagers alleged that a pond constructed at a cost of Rs 20 lakh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has been filled with industrial ash, defeating the purpose of the public welfare project.
They claimed that the dumping is not only damaging government assets but also posing a serious threat to the local ecosystem.
Night dumping and illegal transport alleged
According to residents, overloaded trucks carrying ash are parked along the Biju Expressway during the day and later moved into village areas under the cover of darkness. The waste is reportedly dumped in agricultural fields, riverbanks, forests, and residential zones.
Villagers say this practice has led to declining soil fertility, directly impacting farming and livelihoods. There are also growing concerns about contamination of water sources and harm to biodiversity.
Residents raise alarm over environmental damage and health risks
Local representatives, including Khatkurbahal Sarpanch Jhadi Dhanwar and committee member Pushpa Tirkey, joined residents in voicing strong opposition to the alleged illegal activities.
Residents also complained about the constant movement of heavy vehicles through village roads at night, causing noise pollution, sleep disturbances, and safety concerns.
Demand for strict action
The villagers have demanded an immediate and permanent halt to the illegal ash transportation and dumping. They have also called for the seizure of the detained trucks and strict action against those responsible.
Authorities, including the Kutra Police, have reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Villagers have urged the district administration to intervene promptly, warning that continued inaction could pose a long-term environmental threat to future generations.
