Every year on April 14, the Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti is celebrated to pay homage to the father of the Constitution of India, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.

Dr. BR Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, was a politician, economist, philosopher, anthropologist and social reformer. He fought for the rights of the Dalit community and raised voice against the Indian caste system. He always stood for women and labour rights.

Babasaheb Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891. In India, April 14 is also celebrated as Equality day. Ambedkar Jayanti will be celebrated on Thursday this week.

Janardan Sadashiv Ranapisay, a staunch follower of Ambedkar, celebrated the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar on April 14, 1928, for the first time in Pune. Since then, the country commemorates Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti every year on April 14.

The citizens of India commemorate Babasaheb's contribution towards upliftment of the underprivileged by celebrating the day.

Ambedkar drafted the Constitution of India that guarantees equal rights to all citizens, regardless of caste, creed, religion, race, or culture.

Ambedkar Jayanti is widely observed by his devotees, predominantly Dalits, Adivasis, labourers, and others globally.

As per the custom, the President, Prime Minister and leaders of all major political parties pay homage to Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar's statue at the Parliament in New Delhi.
