Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today inaugurated the Bagchi Sri Shankara Cancer Centre and Research Institute at Info Valley in Odisha capital here.

The 750-bedded comprehensive cancer hospital has been set up with assistance from Bangalore-based Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation. The hospital has all facility to provide radiotherapy to 300 cancer patients and chemotherapy to 150 patients on daily basis, said the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in a statement.

Subroto Bagchi, the chief adviser to Odisha government for institutional capacity building across all civil services training institutions in the state and his wife Susmita Bagchi, the chairperson of Mo School initiative of the state government, have donated funds for the newly-built cancer hospital.

“The new hospital will be instrumental in providing quality and affordable treatment to cancer patients of Odisha as well as the eastern region of the country. The hospital can cater to the needs of at least one-third cancer patients in the state,” said the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister thanked the Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation and the Bagchi couple for their assistance for setting up of the new cancer hospital.

“The state government is taking steps for arranging facility for cancer treatment in several districts of Odisha. Proper awareness and healthy lifestyle are necessary to keep cancer at bay,” said the Chief Minister.

Notably, the cancer institute has been set up with an expenditure of Rs 410 crore. The state government has provided 22 acres of land for the health institute, sources said.
