Bhubaneswar: Cracking a high-profile fraud case, Commissionerate Police arrested three persons for allegedly cheating a Bhubaneswar-based transport businessman.
The accused have been identified as Babul Singh, Suni Singh, and Shivam Kumar. They were apprehended by the Sahidnagar police following a coordinated operation that stretched beyond Odisha to neighbouring Chhattisgarh.
According to police sources, the prime accused, a manager working for the transport businessman, hatched a conspiracy to dupe his employer. The plan was allegedly executed with the help of his younger brother and associates.
In a shocking turn of events, the manager’s brother fled with the businessman’s car while the latter was watching a movie. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras, which later helped the police trace the accused.
Investigations revealed the accused used fake vehicle registration numbers to evade arrest. The police said the fraud was driven by the lure of a ₹6 crore challan. The accused had reportedly planned to deposit the challan and later withdraw the money.
The businessman had earlier deposited a challan worth ₹6 crore in Mayurbhanj, which became the target of the fraudsters.
Acting on technical evidence and surveillance inputs, the Sahidnagar police tracked down the accused in Chhattisgarh and brought them to Bhubaneswar.
The stolen car has also been recovered and seized. The three accused were produced in court and remanded to judicial custody.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
