Bhawanipatna: A shocking incident in Odisha's Kalahandi district has triggered widespread outrage after an 11-month-old baby, allegedly declared dead by doctors, was found to be alive while being taken home by her family. The infant later died, intensifying allegations of medical negligence.

The incident took place at Tungaon village under Koksara block in Kalahandi district.

According to reports, the baby's family had first taken the ailing child, Chandini Patel, daughter of Sanjay Patel, to the Koksara Community Health Centre (CHC). As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to Saheed Rendo Majhi Medical College and Hospital (SRMMCH) in Bhawanipatna for further treatment.

The family alleged that doctors at the hospital declared the infant dead without conducting a thorough examination. However, while taking the child home, they reportedly noticed signs of life, prompting them to raise an alarm. The development sparked panic and raised serious questions over the medical assessment carried out by the hospital staff.

Despite subsequent efforts, the infant later succumbed, according to sources.

The bereaved family has accused the doctors of negligence, alleging that the child was prematurely declared dead without adequate medical evaluation. The incident has also sparked public anger, with local residents demanding accountability and highlighting concerns over the quality of healthcare services in the district.

Following the incident, the district administration and the Health Department have initiated an inquiry. Local residents have demanded a fair and impartial investigation, along with stringent action against those found responsible.

Officials said the exact sequence of events and any lapses, if established, will be determined after the inquiry report is submitted. The allegations of medical negligence are currently under investigation.
