Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has won the Global Sustainability and Innovation Awards 2026 for its excellence in climate-resilient renewable water infrastructure and innovative sludge treatment practices.
The award was presented at a function in New Delhi organised by the Earth Water Foundation. BMC Mayor Sulochana Das and her team received the honour from Durga Shankar Mishra, former Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh and former Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The BMC delegation included Deputy Mayor Manjulata Kanhar, Sanitation Standing Committee Chairman Biranchi Narayan Mahasupakar, Deputy Commissioner N. Ganesh Babu, Lokanatha Bej, and Brahmananda Tarai, Assistant Director (Technical), Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency.
The award recognises BMC’s efforts in promoting climate-friendly water infrastructure and resource recovery from sewage through innovative technologies.
Notably, around 30 solar-powered water kiosks are currently operational across the city, providing sustainable and eco-friendly water solutions.
In Basuaghai, the civic body has implemented advanced systems to scientifically process human waste. Treated wastewater is reused, while solid waste is converted into fertiliser. These measures help prevent contamination of natural water sources and reduce environmental pollution.
