Bhubaneswar: The Pathani Samanta Planetarium in Bhubaneswar has remained non-functional for more than a month. The suspension of shows during the summer vacation has particularly affected school and college students, many of whom are returning disappointed after arriving at the location. Before the suspension, the planetarium used to conduct shows in Odia, Hindi and English from 2 pm to 6 pm daily.
Authorities at the planetarium have put up a notice stating that the shows have been halted due to technical problems. The staff members said they have no information about when the services will resume. The shows have reportedly remained suspended since April 21, but no visible progress has been made towards repairing the system.
Observers have alleged that the recurring technical failures at the planetarium have long been ignored. Equipment breakdowns at the facility are reportedly common, and repair work often takes months to complete. In many cases, damaged systems are left unattended for long periods without restoration.
Planetarium Director Urmiprabha Maharana said a memorandum of understanding has been signed for the upgradation of the facility. She informed that a technical team had already visited to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the renovation work, which is expected to be ready by next month.
She further stated that the air conditioning plant required for operating the shows has become defunct, forcing the authorities to suspend screenings. A work order for repairs is expected to be issued to the concerned agency this week. According to the director, restoring the system may take a month.
