Bhubaneswar: A depression has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall warnings for several districts of Odisha on Monday.

According to the IMD's morning bulletin, a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-north Odisha coasts moved nearly northwestwards and intensified into a depression. At 5.30 am on Monday, it was centred over coastal West Bengal and adjoining areas of Bangladesh and the northwest Bay of Bengal, close to Kolkata.

The system was located around 80 km west-southwest of Satkhira in Bangladesh, 160 km southeast of Bankura in West Bengal and 180 km northeast of Balasore in Odisha.

The IMD said the depression is very likely to move northwestwards towards Jharkhand across Gangetic West Bengal during the next 24 hours.

Red warning for three Odisha districts

The weather office has issued a red warning for Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places in these districts, with extremely heavy rainfall possible at one or two places.

Orange warning for 11 districts

An orange warning has been issued for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul and Dhenkanal.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in these districts.

Yellow warning for six districts

A yellow warning has been issued for Bargarh, Subarnapur, Boudh, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh, where heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places.
