Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Odisha and West Bengal coasts has intensified into a Depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

According to the IMD, the Depression is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the north Odisha coast between Chandbali and Digha, close to Balasore, during the next 24 hours. After making landfall, it is expected to continue moving west-northwestwards across north Odisha and north Chhattisgarh over the following 24 hours.

Under the influence of the system, Odisha has been witnessing widespread rainfall over the past 24 hours, with several districts recording heavy to very heavy showers.

Khajuripada in Kandhamal district recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 276 mm. Other places that received more than 200 mm of rainfall include Tureikela in Balangir district with 264 mm, Phulbani with 224.4 mm, Phiringia with 223.6 mm, G. Udayagiri with 220 mm, Tikabali with 217 mm, Baliguda with 210 mm, Titilagarh with 205.4 mm and Chakapad with 204.6 mm.

The IMD has issued a Red Warning for Bargarh, Sambalpur and Nuapada districts for Sunday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places.

An Orange Warning has been issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Sonepur, Balangir and Kalahandi, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places.

A Yellow Warning is in place for Balasore, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri, with heavy rainfall expected at isolated places.
