Bhubaneswar: A weather system is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal around mid-October, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating a possibility of cyclogenesis (formation of a depression) around October 15.

According to the IMD's extended-range outlook for cyclogenesis over the North Indian Ocean, an upper-air cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge over the North Andaman Sea around October 12. Under its influence, a low-pressure area may form over the Andaman Sea around October 13.

The IMD has assessed a low probability of 1 to 33 per cent for the system to intensify into a depression over the central parts of the South Bay of Bengal and adjoining central Bay of Bengal around October 15.

The forecast is at an early stage. The likely track and intensity of the system will become clearer as the system develops and the date approaches.

The possible weather development comes ahead of Durga Puja, which begins in Odisha on October 16. If the system strengthens and moves closer to the Odisha coast, it could affect weather conditions during the festive period. At present, however, there is not enough clarity to determine its eventual movement or impact on Odisha.
