Bhubaneswar: Serious concerns have emerged over healthcare facilities for senior citizens at the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, where the dedicated geriatric ward has reportedly remained locked.
Despite having a separate geriatric ward with 10 beds and basic facilities, including dedicated washrooms for elderly patients, the unit is currently non-functional. The reasons behind its closure remain unclear, with no official explanation from hospital authorities.
As a result, elderly patients visiting the hospital are being accommodated in the medicine ward or in the corridor outside it. This has raised serious questions about the state of healthcare infrastructure in the capital city.
Seventy-five-year-old Mathuri Samal from Mancheswar, who is undergoing treatment in the corridor, said she was admitted after experiencing severe body tremors and dizziness. “After the doctor advised admission, a hospital staff member brought us to the corridor and arranged a bed. I am receiving treatment here, but the heat is unbearable and making me feel worse,” she said, adding that financial constraints prevent her from seeking treatment elsewhere.
Allegations have surfaced that the hospital administration remains indifferent despite the situation, depriving elderly patients of proper care. Various quarters have demanded the immediate reopening of the geriatric ward to ensure adequate medical services for senior citizens.
