Bhubaneswar: Groundwater levels in Odisha have been steadily declining, with official data showing a noticeable drop over the past five years. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today informed the Assembly that the state has recorded a 0.53 per cent decrease in groundwater levels during this period.

Replying to a question in the House, the Chief Minister said the government has initiated several steps to contain the decline. These include the construction of check dams and groundwater recharge wells aimed at improving water retention and replenishing underground reserves.

In addition, the state has drawn up plans to implement water infrastructure projects. These include the construction of 33 dams, 27 barrages, and 89 in-stream storage projects across Odisha. The initiatives are intended to enhance water conservation and ensure sustainable groundwater management.
