Jajpur: In the second flood-related death in Jajpur district this year, a 12-year-old boy died after being swept away by floodwaters in the district on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Rudra Sahoo, a resident of Ichhapur village under Dasarathpur block.

According to reports, Rudra had gone out to relieve himself when he accidentally slipped and fell into a flooded field. As the road and adjoining agricultural land were submerged and appeared to be at the same level, he reportedly could not identify the danger and was swept away by the floodwaters.

Some villagers noticed the incident and entered the flooded field to rescue the boy. Rudra was subsequently rushed to Mangalpur Community Health Centre (CHC), where doctors declared him dead.

Police recovered the body and sent it to the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Earlier, on August 9, a 55-year-old local artist, Maheswar Sutar, died after being swept away by surging floodwaters in the Kani River, a distributary of the Baitarani River. The incident was also reported from Dasarathpur block.

With Rudra's death, the number of flood-related fatalities reported in Jajpur district this year has risen to two.
