Jajpur: The flood situation in Odisha's Jajpur district has worsened as rising waters of the Kani River breached embankments and entered several villages, leaving many families stranded.

In Dasarathpur block, floodwater from the Kani River has entered Dobhabil village under Tarapada panchayat, flowing at an estimated depth of around three feet. Despite efforts by district and block administration officials to strengthen the embankment with sandbags, authorities have been unable to stop the inflow of water.

The flooding is not limited to Dobhabil. River embankments have been overtopped at several locations along the Kani River, including Brahmacharipatana, Tarapada, Dobhabil, Jangilisahi and Patana. Similarly, floodwater from the Baitarani River has crossed the embankment at Katikata, inundating nearby areas.

At Kantapada, floodwater continues to enter villages through a breach that had developed during the first spell of flooding.

Around 70 families from Taraisahi, Majhisahi and Sahusahi in the Katikata area remain marooned by floodwater. Teams of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to rescue stranded residents.

Meanwhile, a major erosion point has emerged on the Kani River embankment near Jangilisahi under Kaspa panchayat. A section of the embankment collapsed rapidly, and locals were seen carrying out emergency repair work in an attempt to prevent further damage.
