Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.

According to the IMD, the low pressure area developed at 3 am UTC (8.30 am IST) on July 2 under the influence of a cyclonic circulation that had persisted over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha coast since Wednesday.

The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilts southwestwards with height, the weather agency said.

The IMD has predicted that the weather system is likely to become more marked during the next two to three days.

Under the influence of the low pressure area, several parts of Odisha are expected to receive significant rainfall.

Many regions of the state have experienced heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours.
