Sambalpur: A 14-year-old girl went missing after allegedly jumping into the Mahanadi River from the Chaunrpur Bridge in Odisha's Sambalpur on Saturday night.

Fire Services personnel launched a search operation, but strong river currents and darkness hampered rescue efforts, with no trace of the girl found till the latest reports.

The girl, a resident of Mayabagicha area, had reportedly called a neighbouring girl shortly before the incident and informed her that she was about to jump into the river. The call alerted others, following which police and rescue teams rushed to the spot.

According to locals, the girl had been speaking with her male friend. The two had an argument, after which she told her family that she was going to a neighbour's house and left home. She is believed to have later met the boy at the bridge, where another argument broke out.

Police said that around 10 pm, the girl made the call to her neighbour before jumping into the river in the presence of the boy.

The girl's male friend has been detained for questioning, while police have also questioned the young woman who received the call from the minor.
