Burla: A shocking case of alleged medical negligence has surfaced at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, where a newborn reportedly slipped from the mother's womb and fell into a bucket during delivery. 

The incident has sparked serious concerns over patient safety and the availability of senior doctors during night hours.

One twin dies, another injured 

According to reports, Yajnaseni Sahoo (32), who was carrying twins, was admitted to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of VIMSAR, Sambalpur. for delivery. However, due to the alleged lack of timely medical attention, one of the twins died in the womb.

In a disturbing turn of events, the second baby reportedly slipped out of the mother's womb and fell directly into a bucket placed below the delivery table, allegedly because no senior doctor was present at the time. The newborn was immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where it is currently undergoing treatment.

The incident has once again brought the functioning of the state's premier government medical institution under scrutiny. Allegations have been raised that no senior doctors—including professors, associate professors, or assistant professors—remain physically available in the obstetrics ward between 5:30 pm and 9:00 am, making it difficult to provide immediate care during emergencies.

Hospital sources said patients and attendants often struggle to locate doctors when complications arise during the night.

Following the incident, the VIMSAR Superintendent has ordered an inquiry into the matter to ascertain the circumstances that led to the alleged medical negligence. Further action is expected based on the findings of the investigation.

The incident has triggered outrage among the patient's family and renewed concerns over maternal and neonatal care standards at the hospital.
