Bhubaneswar: The police have detained two persons on charges of flying drones over the Jagannath temple at Odisha’s Puri town.

The police swung into action and detained the duo after two drones were spotted hovering over the 12th century shrine today afternoon.

The two persons reportedly operated the drones from the roof of a building at the Mati Mandap Sahi of the Holy Town. The building is just 500 metre away from the shrine, reports said.

The accused duo has been identified as Kalyan Das and Samrat Biswas of Hooghly area of West Bengal.

As per reports, the servitors spotted the two drones flying in the restricted airspace of Jagannath temple while tying new flags atop the shrine and informed the police.

DGCA has declared the shrine as no-fly zone

The cops reportedly deactivated the drones before launching a search for their operators. Many devotees as well locals expressed concern over the incident as security has been tightened in and around the temple for inventory of the Ratna Bhandar (shrine treasury).

It is worth mentioning here that Puri Jagannath temple and its immediate periphery have been declared as a no-fly zone by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to create a security ring around the shrine.

However, some people used to operate drones in the restricted airspace in violation of the norms. During interrogation, the duo reportedly expressed their ignorance about the rules restricting flying of drones over the shrine.
