Kataka: In a disturbing incident, a Class IX student allegedly died by suicide after his mother took away his mobile phone in Jagatpur area of Kataka district.

Police sources stated the minor belonged to a locality under Jagatpur police limits and was studying at a school in the Pagaa area. He was reportedly spending excessive time on his mobile phone, neglecting his studies, which had been a matter of concern for his family.

Despite repeated warnings from his mother, the boy did not reduce his mobile usage. 

Yesterday, his mother confiscated the phone in an attempt to discipline him. Upset over this, the minor allegedly consumed pesticide kept at home for protecting stored grains from insects.

Family members rushed him to the SCB Medical College and Hospital after his condition deteriorated. However, he succumbed while undergoing treatment.

Police have registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem examination. The body was later handed over to the family. Further investigation is underway.
