Bhubaneswar: Kesinga Railway Station in Odisha's Kalahandi district has undergone a major transformation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, emerging as a modern, accessible and passenger-friendly railway hub with upgraded infrastructure and enhanced commuter amenities.

Redeveloped at an estimated cost of Rs 22 crore, the station now offers improved facilities aimed at providing a safer, more convenient and seamless travel experience while strengthening its role as a key rail gateway to western Odisha.

The redevelopment project includes modernization of the existing station building, construction of a new second entry to ease passenger movement, a 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge equipped with three lifts for barrier-free access, upgraded platform surfaces and shelters, wider approach roads, improved pedestrian pathways and a modern drainage system.

Passenger amenities have also been significantly enhanced with better toilets, a retiring room and a dormitory, making the station more comfortable for travellers.

Designed with inclusivity in mind, the revamped station caters to the needs of senior citizens, Divyangjan and families. Improved circulation areas and accessible public spaces are expected to ensure smoother and safer movement for passengers.

Established in 1931, Kesinga Railway Station has been a vital stop on the Raipur–Vizianagaram line of East Coast Railway, connecting Kalahandi with major cities in Odisha and neighbouring states. The station has played a crucial role in facilitating passenger movement, trade and commerce, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the region.

Officials said the upgraded station is expected to boost regional connectivity and support the aspirations of residents, students, farmers, traders and tourists by improving travel convenience and encouraging commercial and tourism activities.

Kalahandi, known for its rich tribal heritage, vibrant cultural traditions and the internationally acclaimed Ghumura dance, is also famous for its handloom products, handicrafts and colourful festivals. The redeveloped railway station now serves as a modern gateway to the culturally rich district.

Kesinga is among the 57 railway stations in Odisha being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and is one of the stations being dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister. The project reflects Indian Railways' commitment to creating modern, inclusive and future-ready railway stations with enhanced passenger amenities, universal accessibility and sustainable infrastructure.
