Bhubaneswar: A Vigilance court today convicted an official of the Odisha Police in a bribery case and sentenced him to four years of rigorous imprisonment (RI).

The Special Vigilance Court in Cuttack convicted Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Athagarh police station, Amiya Kumar Behera, in the bribery case.

The case had been registered against Behera for demanding and accepting bribe from a person during his tenure as the ASI at Jenapur police station in Jajpur.

The ASI had allegedly sought bribe from the person concerned to show undue favours to him in a case of crime.

The accused police officer was earlier charge sheeted by the Odisha Vigilance under various Sections of Prevention of Corruption Act-1988.

Soon after his conviction, the police ASI was taken into custody and sent to a jail to serve his sentence.

“The Odisha Vigilance will soon move the competent authority for dismissal of the ASI from service following his conviction in the bribery case,” said an official.
