Bhubaneswar: The Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Crime Branch has intensified its crackdown on interstate drug trafficking by launching a data-driven campaign to identify, track and dismantle organised narcotics networks operating across Odisha and other states.

As part of the ongoing drive, the STF has arrested three alleged cannabis traffickers linked to a Rajasthan-based drug syndicate and seized Rs 3.86 lakh in cash during searches conducted in connection with the case.

According to an STF press release, the agency is preparing a comprehensive database of cannabis and other drug smugglers by collecting information from crime branches across various states. The consolidated dossier will be used to identify interstate syndicates and initiate coordinated legal action against offenders.

To strengthen the investigation, STF teams recently visited Gujarat and Rajasthan to gather intelligence and establish links in the interstate trafficking network.

Three arrested in 227.4 kg ganja seizure case

The arrests were made in connection with STF Police Station Case No. 08 dated April 18, 2026, registered under Sections 20(b)(ii)(C), 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985.

The case stems from the seizure of 227.400 kg of ganja from an Eicher Pro 2114 container truck (Registration No. GJ-27-TD-1541) intercepted on NH-16 near Pitapali under Jatni Police Station in Khordha district on April 18. The vehicle was allegedly transporting the contraband from Adava in Gajapati district, Odisha, to Rajasthan.

Following the seizure, the STF had arrested Paras Nath, a resident of Bhilwara, Rajasthan, who was allegedly transporting the commercial quantity of cannabis.

Subsequent investigation, backed by technical evidence, field intelligence and witness statements, uncovered the involvement of an organised Odisha-based network engaged in procuring, storing and transporting cannabis across state borders.

Accused arrested

The STF has arrested the following three accused:

• Sibaram Biswal (38) of Phasiguda, Digapahandi, Ganjam district.
• Sibaram Patra (33) of Chanameri, Digapahandi, Ganjam district.
• Kana Mitu alias Manoranjan Sabat (49) of Brajaraja Nagar, Berhampur, Ganjam district.
  
  

Cash, mobile phones seized

During searches, STF officials recovered Rs 3.86 lakh in cash from the residence of Sibaram Biswal, along with mobile phones and other incriminating materials suspected to be linked to the narcotics trade.

Officials said the source of the seized money and its possible connection with drug trafficking proceeds are under investigation.

Criminal antecedents under scanner

The STF said preliminary investigation revealed that Kana Mitu alias Manoranjan Sabat has multiple criminal cases registered against him, including offences related to kidnapping, extortion, assault and excise violations. Sibaram Biswal also has an earlier NDPS case registered at Bhusawal City Police Station in Maharashtra in 2023. Authorities said further verification of their criminal records is underway.

Financial probe launched

Investigators believe the arrested accused played a crucial role in facilitating the procurement, concealment and interstate transportation of commercial quantities of ganja from Odisha to Rajasthan and other parts of the country through a well-organised trafficking network.

All three accused are being produced before the jurisdictional magistrate. The STF will seek police remand of Sibaram Biswal and Kana Mitu alias Manoranjan Sabat to identify other members of the syndicate, trace the financial trail, identify end beneficiaries and gather further evidence.

The STF has also initiated a financial investigation into the assets of all the accused as part of its efforts to dismantle the interstate drug trafficking network.
