Bhubaneswar: A woman delivered a baby girl on a tractor while being taken to a hospital after an ambulance allegedly failed to reach her village due to poor roads in Odisha’s Kalahandi district.

The incident took place in Jayapatna area of Kalahandi last night.

As per reports, Urmila Majhi, the wife of Domu Majhi of Dabirighati village under Amalabhatta panchayat, complained of labour pain at around 11.30 pm last night.

Her family members immediately contacted an ambulance to admit her to a hospital at Maidalpur in neighbouring Nabarangpur district.

However, the ambulance could not reach Dabirighati village due to poor condition of the roads. The vehicle, somehow, managed to travel up to Chacharaguda, located around 10 km away from the woman’s village.

Having no other option, the woman’s family arranged a tractor to carry her to Chacharaguda. However, the woman delivered on the tractor midway, reports said.

The woman and her baby were later admitted to the hospital at Maidalpur. However, the doctors referred the woman to Nabarangpur district headquarters hospital (DHH) after she was diagnosed with anemia and malaria, they added.

The locals, meanwhile, urged the administration to take the necessary steps for a motorable road to Dabirighati village, which is located on the border between Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts.
