Binika (Sonepur): In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns over law and order, unidentified miscreants opened fire at the residence of Binika Block Chairperson Dipti Rekha Nand in Singijuba village under Sonepur district late on Friday night.
According to reports, more than 20 to 25 rounds were allegedly fired at the house. While no casualties have been reported, bullets struck portions of the gate, shutter, and two vehicles parked inside and outside the premises.
Family members said the attackers targeted the residence around midnight and continued firing for several minutes before fleeing the spot. Fortunately, none of the occupants inside the house were injured in the attack.
Dipti Rekha Nand is the current Block Chairperson of Binika, while her husband Ashok Nand is a former Block Chairperson and the district president of the youth wing of Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
The motive behind the attack is yet to be established. The victims have stated that they do not have any known personal or political enmity.
CCTV footage being examined after late-night firing incident
Following the incident, police teams rushed to the spot and initiated an investigation. Officials examined CCTV footage from the residence as well as nearby areas to identify the assailants and trace their movement.
Sources said forensic teams may also be involved as part of the probe to determine the type of weapons used and the sequence of firing.
Local political leaders have expressed concern over the incident. A state-level political functionary has demanded a fair and impartial investigation, alleging that law and order in the region is deteriorating.
Police have also begun questioning the family members, including Ashok Nand, as part of the initial investigation. However, officials have declined to comment on the case, citing the ongoing inquiry.
The incident has triggered tension in the area, with residents demanding swift action against those responsible and enhanced security for public representatives.
