Jagatsinghpur: In a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at promoting patriotism and reform among prison inmates, Odisha Directorate of Prisons and Correctional Services has directed all jails in the state to screen patriotic films and documentaries on Independence Day, Republic Day, and Gandhi Jayanti.

The Directorate has issued instructions to all Range Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) and Superintendents of Circle Jails to make arrangements for the screenings during the three national occasions.

The move follows a proposal raised by Jagatsinghpur MLA Amarendra Das, who placed the demand of Alakashram, often referred to as the "Sabarmati Ashram of Jagatsinghpur district," before Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

According to the directive, Range DIGs will coordinate with jail superintendents to implement the programme. The Directorate has laid down three key conditions for the screenings:

• The jail superintendent must approve every film or documentary before it is screened.
• Movies containing criminal content, sexual exploitation, excessive violence, suspense, or themes that may negatively influence inmates are strictly prohibited.
• Only films and documentaries that are legally certified and recognised by the government will be permitted.

Proposal originated from Alakashram

According to available information, Gouranga Hota, Acting President of Alakashram, had submitted a proposal to the Chief Minister through MLA Amarendra Das on August 2, 2025.

In the letter, Hota pointed out that while the country celebrates the sacrifices of freedom fighters on Independence Day and Republic Day, prison inmates often remain disconnected from the significance of these national events.

He noted that ministers and dignitaries visiting prisons on such occasions generally distribute fruits to inmates before leaving. Along with such welfare measures, he suggested organising meaningful entertainment and educational programmes, such as screenings of patriotic films, to inspire inmates and contribute to their rehabilitation.

The proposal was subsequently forwarded by the MLA to the Chief Minister on July 13, 2026. The Chief Minister's Office then instructed the Director General of Prisons to examine the matter and take appropriate action.

Acting on the directive, the Odisha Directorate of Prisons issued the official communication on July 24, paving the way for the initiative to be implemented. The programme is expected to begin with the screening of patriotic films and documentaries in jails across Odisha on August 15, 2026, marking India's Independence Day.
