Bhubaneswar: The authorities have initiated process for renovation and development of the largest pond in Odisha’s Kataka city.

The Kataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) will spend around Rs 35 crore for the restoration and beautification of ‘Revenue Pond’ at Tulasipur and establishment of recreational facilities on its periphery, said mayor Subhash Chandra Singh.

The pond, spread over around 12 acres, has been lying abandoned for last several years. It has been completely covered with silt, water hyacinth and moss, locals said.  

“We have started the process for the restoration of Revenue Pond at Tulasipur. There is also a plan to set up recreational facilities on a 14-acre government plot adjacent to the pond. The state government has sanctioned Rs 10 crore towards the project in the first phase,” added Singh.

According to the mayor, the civic authorities have planned to set up a park with open gym, a mega Kalyan Mandap (community centre) with adequate parking facility and food court near the pond.

“The proposed community centre will have the facility for the congregation of around 3,000 people. At least 10 stalls will come up at the food court. Besides, steps will be taken for the establishment of a restaurant for the visitors. The youngsters can also enjoy boating at Revenue Pond,” said Singh.

According to the KMC officials, a target has been set to complete the project within one and a half years. “Soon, the Revenue Pond will become a major attraction for locals as well as visitors to the Silver City,” said an official.
