Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised Sujata Bhuyan from Odisha’s Sambalpur district for her success in fish farming, describing her journey as an example of women-led entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

During his 'Mann Ki Baat' radio programme, the Prime Minister said India’s fishing community plays a key role in strengthening the country’s economy. He noted that fishermen venture into the sea before dawn, contributing significantly to both their families and the nation.

Modi also spoke about steps taken by the government to support the fisheries sector. He said initiatives such as port development, insurance schemes and the use of technology to deal with changing weather conditions are helping improve the lives of fishermen. Highlighting innovation in the sector, the Prime Minister said new ideas in fisheries and seaweed cultivation are encouraging people to become self-reliant.

Referring to Sujata Bhuyan’s journey, Modi said she was once a homemaker who wanted to support her family by doing something new. She started fish farming in the Hirakud reservoir a few years ago despite facing several challenges in the initial phase.

Bhuyan had to deal with issues such as unpredictable weather, arranging feed for fish and managing household responsibilities. However, she remained determined and continued her efforts.

Within two to three years, her work turned into a successful business. Modi said her achievement is now inspiring other women in the community and giving them hope to explore similar opportunities.
