Cuttack: Reacting to the recent controversy surrounding Ravenshaw University, former legislator Soumya Ranjan Patnaik has urged all stakeholders to come forward and resolve the issue amicably.

Speaking on the matter, Patnaik said the student protest appeared to have been triggered by a relatively minor issue. He described it as an internal matter of the university that should have been handled within the institution itself.

He questioned the involvement of Cuttack Sadar MLA Prakash Chandra Sethi in the controversy, alleging unnecessary interference had escalated the situation. Patnaik remarked elected representatives should prioritise addressing the concerns of people in their constituencies, especially during challenging times such as floods.

“Instead of understanding the distress of the people, it is not appropriate to get involved in such matters,” he said, adding leaders should remain focused on public welfare.

Patnaik also advised the MLA to take a cue from the leadership style of the Prime Minister, emphasising the importance of responsibility and restraint in public life. He further stated offering an apology, if required, would not diminish the stature of any leader.

The controversy at Ravenshaw University has drawn attention in recent days, with students staging protests and political reactions intensifying the debate.

The dispute involves Cuttack Sadar MLA Prakash Chandra Sethi and university authorities, with the Ravenshaw University Teachers’ Association demanding an unconditional apology from the legislator. On the other hand, Sethi has sought action against Chief Warden Sudarshan Mishra through a letter to the Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

In his letter, the MLA alleged he had visited the university to address students’ hostel-related grievances when the Chief Warden engaged in an argument with him. Claiming the incident amounted to misconduct, Sethi urged the Speaker to ensure appropriate action against the Chief Warden.

Meanwhile, the Ravenshaw Teachers' Association has strongly backed the Chief Warden and reiterated its demand for an unconditional apology from the MLA.
