Cuttack: The SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha's Cuttack is set for a major infrastructure upgrade with plans for a large underground parking facility and an indoor stadium.
According to the proposal, a two-level underground parking structure will be developed behind the CN-4 block of the new hospital building. The facility is expected to accommodate around 3,500 vehicles at a time. Above the parking area, authorities are planning to construct an indoor stadium, which may include badminton and tennis courts. The project is currently awaiting approval from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
The new hospital complex is being developed over 45 acres, with four nine-storey buildings housing a total of 2,058 beds. With the expansion, the demand for parking has increased significantly, prompting authorities to explore multiple options.
Earlier, three locations were identified for parking. A site near the Mahanadi riverbed was considered, but restrictions imposed by the National Green Tribunal on the construction stalled the proposal. Another plan over the Taladanda canal involved a seven-storey structure with parking, a mall, and attendant facilities, but concerns were raised over its potential impact on the canal’s aesthetics.
Subsequently, a 6.5-acre patch between the new hospital and residential quarters has been finalised for the project. However, officials estimate that about 14 acres would ideally be required.
