Bhubaneswar: Acting on a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Odisha government has mandated that ‘Vande Mataram’ be sung before the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ at government events and in schools.

The state government has emphasised the original lyrics, pronunciation, and tune of both must be strictly followed, with any incorrect rendition to be avoided.

According to an official letter issued by Additional Secretary Nityananda Singh of the School and Mass Education Department, guidelines released by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on July 9 are to be implemented in letter and spirit across schools in the state.

The department has directed District Education Officers (DEOs), Block Education Officers (BEOs), and heads of government as well as government-aided schools to ensure compliance.

The Odisha Home Department has also communicated the directive to Revenue Divisional Commissioners (RDCs), Collectors, and Superintendents of Police (SPs).

Schools have been encouraged to promote the collective singing of the national anthem during morning assemblies. Authorities have also been asked to instill a sense of respect among students towards the national flag, the national anthem, and the national song.

The guidelines further state whenever the national anthem is played or sung, everyone present must stand in attention as a mark of respect. However, standing is not required when the anthem is played as part of a film or documentary.

Institutions have also been advised to avoid unnecessary or inappropriate use of the national anthem.

The state government has urged all educational authorities to ensure strict compliance with these guidelines across institutions.
