Bhubaneswar: Nandankanan Zoological Park observed World Elephant Day 2026 with a series of engaging activities aimed at promoting elephant conservation, welfare and public awareness.

The programme was attended by Tapan Chakravarty, Sarpanch of Daruthenga; Khulana Majhi, Sarpanch of Raghunathpur; and Pradeep Mirase, Deputy Director of Nandankanan Zoological Park.

The celebrations began with a special feeding enrichment activity for the elephants. Basanti, Hira, Asha and Lisha were provided nutritious fruit treats as part of an initiative designed to encourage natural feeding behaviour.

The zoo also felicitated its dedicated mahouts for their valuable contribution to elephant care and management.

A Keepers’ Talk, on-the-spot quiz and signature campaign were organised to engage visitors and students and raise awareness about elephant behaviour, welfare and conservation.

The Zoo Library and Digital Hub hosted several activities, including storytelling, performances by schoolchildren portraying Asian and African elephants, elephant origami and a movie screening on elephant conservation. Visitors also participated in hand-painting activities featuring elephant-themed artwork.

A special Elephant Frame photo session added a fun element to the celebrations.

As part of the programme, school students were taken on a tour of the elephant enclosure from the viewing area, where they had an opportunity to observe the animals and learn about their biology, care and management as part of ex-situ conservation.

Through the various activities, Nandankanan Zoological Park reaffirmed its commitment to elephant welfare, conservation education and creating greater public awareness about the need to protect elephants and their habitats.
