Dhenkanal: Tension prevailed after a 21-year-old youth allegedly died by suicide over fear of police action in Nimidha village of Odisha's Dhenkanal district today. The deceased has been identified as Benupani Sahu. While the exact cause of death is not established yet, relatives claimed mental stress following police detention of family members over his love marriage with a girl. 

As per reports, Benupani was in a relationship and had got married to a minor girl from Samakoi village which comes under Angul Sadar police limits. The girl's family, after getting to know about their wedding, had reported the matter to the police acting on which Benupani's parents and two other relatives had been taken into custody for questioning. 

Youth was distressed over detention of parents in police custody 

On Thursday night, Benupani returned from Mumbai and came to know that his father Gautam Sahu, mother, and other family members had been taken by police. Family members and villagers claimed that he was deeply disturbed after hearing the news. The following morning, he was found hanging inside his house. By the time the incident came to light, he was declared dead.

The minor girl, who is said to be living with him, alleged that pressure created by the case and action against his family led to the tragic incident.

The death has triggered tension in the village, with residents expressing anger over the reported detention of family members. Police are yet to issue an official statement on the matter, while further investigation is underway.
