Jajpur: A youth who was critically injured in a late-night firing incident in Odisha’s Jajpur town succumbed to his injuries today while undergoing treatment.

The incident took place around 11 pm on Monday near the Kalimegha area under Jajpur Town police limits. The deceased has been identified as Soumya Ranjan Samal, a resident of Kuansarpur.

According to reports, Samal, who was engaged in a poultry business, was returning home when unidentified miscreants opened fire at him near the residence of former MLA Pranab Prakash Das. The attackers reportedly arrived on a motorcycle and fled the scene after the shooting.

Samal sustained critical injuries and was initially admitted to the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital. Later, he was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for better treatment. However, he breathed his last during the treatment.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and the identity of the assailants was yet to be established. Police have reached the spot and launched an investigation into the incident.
