Bhubaneswar, March 14, 2026: The Odisha government has announced a major initiative under GRAMODAYA aimed at integrating youth from remote and Maoist-affected regions into the social mainstream while promoting sports and healthy lifestyles.
Sports kits to be distributed in 485 villages
Under the “GRAMODAYA” campaign, launched following the Chief Minister’s call, the Department of Sports and Youth Services will distribute sports equipment to 485 Maoist-affected villages across 10 districts of the state.
The department has sanctioned a total of Rs 2,42,50,000 for the scheme. Each selected village will receive a sports kit worth Rs 50,000 to encourage youth participation in sports and community activities.
Youth in 10 districts to benefit
The initiative will benefit young people in Bargarh, Balangir, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Nuapada and Rayagada districts, many of which have been affected by Maoist activities.
Kits to include equipment for indoor and outdoor games
Each village will receive a standard sports kit containing equipment for several outdoor and indoor games. Outdoor sports include cricket, football, volleyball and badminton, while indoor games include chess and carrom.
Local youth clubs to handle procurement
In a unique approach, the responsibility of purchasing sports equipment will be entrusted to local youth clubs. In villages where such clubs do not exist, District Sports Officers will facilitate the formation of new youth clubs.
This step is expected to encourage community participation and strengthen youth engagement at the grassroots level.
Initiative aims to promote peace and talent
Officials said the “GRAMODAYA” campaign is not just about distributing sports kits but also about sending a message of peace, progress and social harmony in Maoist-affected areas.
The Odisha government aims to identify and nurture hidden sporting talent in remote regions while encouraging a disciplined and healthy lifestyle among rural youth.
