Barbil: Reinforcing its commitment to a strong safety culture, JSW Steel carried out a comprehensive fire safety mock drill at its Odisha Mining Division in Barbil, Keonjhar district.
The exercise was organised as part of National Fire Service Week, highlighting the company’s proactive approach to emergency preparedness.
Focus on emergency response and coordination
The mock drill was designed to evaluate evacuation procedures, test firefighting equipment, and assess coordination among employees during a simulated fire emergency. The drill began with the activation of the fire alarm, followed by the swift evacuation of personnel from designated zones.
Demonstration of firefighting measures
Fire response teams demonstrated the use of hydrants and extinguishers, while safety officers monitored response times and adherence to established safety protocols. Observers noted disciplined participation by employees and effective execution of procedures.
Scope for improvement identified
While the overall response was commendable, minor areas for improvement were identified, particularly in underground signage and hydrant operations, which the company aims to address in future drills.
Ongoing training strengthens safety culture
The company’s security department highlighted its continued focus on safety awareness through regular training. A total of 54 fire safety training sessions have been conducted so far, with participation from over 2,100 individuals, including company officials, ITMS personnel, and contractual workers.
Commitment to workplace safety
The drill, successfully executed by the security team, underscores JSW Steel’s emphasis on building a safety-first work environment where employees are well-prepared to handle emergencies efficiently.
