Bhubaneswar: The two-day Pakhala Paraba 2026 was inaugurated at Panthanivas in Bhubaneswar on Thursday, celebrating Odisha’s iconic dish and its vibrant culinary heritage.
The inaugural session was addressed by Tourism Director Deepankar Mahapatra, setting the tone for the festivities.
CM, Deputy CM to attend second day
The celebrations will continue on Friday in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, along with other dignitaries, adding prominence to the event.
Experts highlight sustainability and food heritage
The opening session featured keynote addresses by Padma Shri Dr. Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, Prof. Sitikantha Mishra, and Sandip Mukherjee, who emphasised sustainable eating practices, the importance of rice diversity, and the role of traditional cuisine in modern hospitality.
Panel discussions explore roots and global potential
Two thematic panel discussions examined both the cultural depth and future scope of Odia cuisine. The first, titled ‘From Temple Kitchens to Home Hearths’, delved into the spiritual and historical connections of traditional food practices.
The second panel, ‘From Local Tradition to Global Brand’, focused on strategies to position Odia cuisine on the global stage, discussing branding, innovation, and marketing approaches.
The conference also featured special presentations by eminent personalities including Sudarshan Sahoo, Dr. G.A. Kumar (Director, CRRI), Swosti Mishra, and Shabnam Afrin, alongside keynote addresses by Chef Manjit Singh Gill and Dr. Suniti Mund, further enriching the discourse.
Cultural performances add vibrancy
The event featured captivating cultural performances, including Odissi, Sambalpuri, tribal, and Gotipua dances, creating a unique blend of gastronomy and tradition.
Guinness record attempt with massive Pakhala serving
A major highlight of Pakhala Paraba 2026 is the attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the largest serving of fermented rice (Pakhala), with 800–850 kg being prepared. The initiative aims to promote Odisha’s culinary heritage globally while showcasing its nutritional value.
Focus on sustainability with zero-wastage initiative
Organised in collaboration with the Robin Hood Army, the event also emphasises sustainability through a strict zero-wastage policy, ensuring that the celebration remains environmentally responsible.
