Puri:  A woman was allegedly charred to death by her in-laws for dowry at Jena Sahi in Taradapada village under Nimapara police limits in Puri district last night, hours before Savitri festival when married women pray for long life of their husbands.

The deceased has been identified as Diptimayee, wife of Krushna Chandra Jena.

As per a complaint lodged by uncle of the deceased, in-laws of Diptimayee had been frequently torturing her both mentally and physically demanding more dowries ever since her marriage in 2015. Last night, Diptimayee’s in-laws set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her as she expressed her inability to bring dowries further.

Acting on the complaint, police detained her husband Krushna Chandra and his father Rabindra. However, Diptimayee’s mother-in-law Manjulata is absconding after the incident, sources added.

Further investigation is on in connection with the incident.
