Bhubaneswar: A stormy special session gripped the Odisha Assembly as Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik clashed over women’s safety and governance, while Congress Legislature Party leader Ramachandra Kadam intensified the debate with sharp remarks targeting the BJP.
Dana Majhi incident recalled as political tempers flare in Assembly
Parida launched a counterattack on Patnaik, invoking the Dana Majhi incident to question the previous government’s record on women’s dignity. She accused the opposition of indulging in “crocodile tears” despite alleged failures during its long tenure.
However, the spotlight soon shifted to Kadam, who directly challenged the BJP during the discussion on the Women’s Reservation Bill.
Ramachandra Kadam challenges BJP to appoint a woman Chief Minister
Throwing a bold challenge, Kadam said if the ruling party truly believes in women’s empowerment, it should demonstrate it by appointing a woman as Chief Minister. He suggested that leaders like Pravati Parida or even the Speaker Surama Padhy could be elevated to the top post, questioning the sincerity of the BJP’s commitment.
Kadam also strongly criticised the delay in implementing the reservation bill, asking why a law passed in 2023 has not yet been enforced. He alleged that linking the bill with delimitation is merely an excuse to stall its rollout.
“The government must clarify what is stopping it. Is there a lack of intent?” he asked, adding that women’s empowerment cannot be reduced to political rhetoric.
The Congress leader further highlighted the historic role of women in India’s political and social movements, arguing that their representation should not be delayed due to political calculations.
The debate quickly escalated into a three-way confrontation, with the ruling BJP, BJD, and Congress exchanging allegations over women’s rights, governance, and legislative priorities.
As proceedings continue, the issue of women’s safety, dignity, and meaningful political representation remains at the centre of Odisha’s political battleground.
