World Obesity Day is annually observed on March 4 to acknowledge and respond to the obesity crisis across the globe.  It is convened by the World Obesity Federation in collaboration with its global members.

Hundreds of thousands of people from various corners of the world contribute to World Obesity Day every year. The mission is to:

  • Increase awareness about ‘obesity’ as a disease.
  • Encourage advocacy and change the way obesity is addressed in the society.
  • Improve policies to build the right support system for dealing with obesity.
  • Share experiences so others would be inspired and unite to stand as a global community to work towards a common goal.

Obesity is a disease or disorder involving excessive body fat that increases the risks of health problems. It basically results when a person takes in more calories than are burnt by exercise and normal daily activities. It could be treated by changing lifestyle and diet habits and daily exercising.

Statistics claim as many as 800 million people from around the world are obese. Many more are at risk of falling prey to obesity.

The theme for World Obesity Day 2022 is ‘Everybody Needs to Act.’  It calls upon:

  • Obese people to resort to change.
  • Healthcare professionals to show they care.
  • Employers to end their stigma.
  • Policy makers to lead the way.
