Bhubaneswar: Good news for women travellers! The Indian Railways today set up a sanitary napkin vending machine at Bhubaneswar Railway station in Odisha capital to ensure comfortable and dignified journey for women passengers.

The facility was installed at the second class ladies’ waiting hall at platform No- 1 by the East Coast Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation (ECoRWWO).

The system was inaugurated by ECoRWWO President Madhulika Singh in presence of other officials.

"This will not only be helpful for passengers but also women who work at the station," Singh said.

Bhubaneswar station has become the first railway station in the State to have installed such a machine.

Named 'Happy Nari', the machine has a capacity of storing 75 sanitary napkins at once, which will be refilled by a female staff attendant at the waiting room who has been specially trained for it.

The machine dispenses a sanitary napkin on insertion of a Rs 5 coin(other coins of equal denominations) in the machine, a railway official said.

Worth mentioning, the Indian Railways had earlier announced that it will install sanitary napkin dispensers and incinerators at 200 major railway stations in the country by the International Women’s Day on March 8.

Bhopal station is the first railway station in the country to have installed such a machine on January 1.
