Bhubaneswar: A 26-year-old postgraduate student of AIIMS Bhubaneswar was found dead in her rented apartment in the city on Tuesday, police said.
A handwritten suicide note recovered from the room suggests that she was unable to bear prolonged pain and stated that no one should be held responsible for her death.
The deceased has been identified as Divya V., a native of Kolar district in Karnataka. She was a third-year postgraduate student and was working as an Academic Junior Resident in the Department of Pharmacology at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Divya was staying in a rented flat at Cosmopolis Apartment along with another AIIMS postgraduate student. On Tuesday morning, her roommate left for the hospital at around 9:30 am, leaving Divya alone in the room. When she returned around 1 pm, she found the room locked from the inside.
After receiving no response despite repeated calls, the roommate grew suspicious and opened the door using a duplicate key. She found Divya hanging from a ceiling fan with a bedsheet. The incident was then reported to the police.
A team from Khandagiri police station reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to AIIMS for further procedures. A scientific team also examined the apartment as part of the investigation.
Police have seized a handwritten suicide note found in a diary inside the room. In the note, Divya reportedly wrote that she could no longer endure the pain and sought forgiveness, while stating that no one was responsible for her decision.
The note would be sent to the Handwriting Bureau of the State Forensic Science Laboratory in Rasulgarh to verify whether it was written by Divya.
During questioning of her friends, classmates and colleagues, police learned that Divya had been suffering from a medical condition and was experiencing severe pain. She had been admitted to AIIMS for treatment on April 24 due to her illness. Her roommate also informed police that the pain had become increasingly unbearable in recent days.
Police have launched an investigation and are examining all aspects of the case.
