Bhubaneswar: A criminal was injured in a police encounter during a raid conducted by the Special Crime Unit in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Papun Majhi, allegedly opened fire at police personnel while attempting to escape near Arisal Chhak.

The accused was reportedly transporting drugs when the Special Crime Unit intercepted him. During the operation, Papun allegedly fired at the police team, prompting retaliatory firing by the cops. In the exchange of fire, Papun sustained a bullet injury to his leg.

A police personnel was also injured during the operation.

Police seized drugs worth lakhs of rupees from the accused along with a 7.6 mm pistol. Police said Papun was involved in nearly 20 criminal cases, including illegal drug trade and arms dealing.

The accused, a native of the Buguda area, was allegedly operating a criminal network in Bhubaneswar. The Special Crime Unit operation was led by DCP Anup Kanungo.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
